The challenge of representing a Catholic NGO and working for development in Africa

Published: 05 December 2010

Despite the recent Pope’s statement about the possibility of using condoms in some cases, such as for protitutes avoiding HIV/Aids, the Catholic Church condemns the use of condoms. In 2009, during his first papal visit to Africa, Benedict XVI said that handing out condoms is not the answer in the fight against HIV/Aids. But institutions and NGOs continue their campains for the use of condom, essential also in those Countries where birth control is needed. Roeland Scholtabers, Media and Communication Officer for CIDSE, an international alliance of Catholic development agencies, explained how challenging could be working for developing Countries facing Church’s statements.
